 Feb. 7 to 11th

 

Literacy- 

As we continue to learn about biographies and autobiographies, the students in room 8 began to write their own autobiography. It has been a great opportunity for us to learn more about each other and further develop our writing skills. To support this process we divided our write-ups into four paragraphs; All about me, My Family, Where I live and My past. This week the students will complete the editing process and record themselves reading their autobiography. We will then post them in our own google classroom for you to enjoy. 

 

As part of the Fab four reciprocal reading strategies we are focusing on summarizing. This week we learned about several prominent black historical figures and used the following guiding questions to help us prior to independently writing our own summaries.  





 In Math, the grade three students reviewed and practiced adding mentally by noticing pairs that add to 10 or multiplies of 10. We also practiced using addition to the double of a number and used this knowledge to add two and three digit numbers that do not require regrouping for example; 243+ 243= 486. Lastly, we learned how to use a blank number line as a math strategy when finding the difference. 





In Science we used the opportunity on our community walk, to start our unit on hot and cold temperatures. We learned about common markers on a thermometer to help us appreciate what happens at certain temperatures such as water boiling at 100 degrees Celsius, 37 degrees is our normal body temperature, etc. We learned how to use a thermometer properly and collected data from various locations while outside to compare and contrast how the temperature may vary. 

 

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, students used all their addition knowledge and mental math strategies to solve addition word problems. Students reviewed parts of a word problem and key words to help identify which operation is required. The group ended off the week practicing writing story problems using a given a picture or answer. Then everyone had fun writing their own unique word problems to share with each other.

The story of Emily Carr was a sure way to inspire our class and connect our learning to our focus book  The Tree in Me  by Corinna Luyken. Week of April 24th

 This week in Math, we have started our money unit. In this unit we will learn how to count money, including coins and bills. We will learn the relationships among coins, including the penny. Although the penny is no longer used in Canada, the value of the penny as one cent is still important as the base value of all the other coins. We will count money amounts involving coins starting with the larger value, and we will learn to represent money amounts using the least number of coins. Once we have familiarized ourselves with coins we will learn how to make change by counting to the nearest multiple of ten and then counting up to the nearest dollar.  Our money unit has a great connection to our Social Studies topic regarding the difference between needs and wants as well discussing and identifying the difference between goods and services. Week of Sept 12th

We had a wonderful week in Room 8. In literacy, we have started to discuss how to improve our writing skills to include more detail and how to entertain our audience. To help support this process, we discussed a watermelon versus a seed story or the concept of exploding the moment. We will be working on this skill throughout the year as we improve our writing skills. As an introductory lesson, it was impressive to see the level of writing that already exists.  In math this week, we introduced the concept of finding the area of a 2-D dimensional shape. The grade 3's learned how to use a cm grid and count the number of grids in an area, and the grade 4's applied their knowledge of multiplication by using the formula area= Length x width. Both grades also learned and reviewed their knowledge of measurement.
