Week of November 14th

Our class would like to start by saying a big "Thank you " for all the wonderful donations collected for our Veteran's Food Bank drive. It was lovely to see the generosity of our Ramsay School community.

We have been using the book, One Grain of Rice by Demi in literacy and math to explore number patterns. This great book provided a wonderful opportunity to apply our knowledge of character traits. For example, we discussed the qualities that make a good leader and how a leader is successful. In the story, the Raja (a Hindu priest or chief) failed to fulfill his role and was consequently unjust and selfish. As with most read-alouds we also use this as an opportunity to introduce and learn new vocabulary words such as; plentiful, modest and implored.

One Grain of Rice introduced the students to the concept of an exponential growth pattern. The growth pattern for the rice that was gained by the character Rani was by doubling the previous term ( i.e. 1+1=2, 2+2=4, 4+4=8 etc.) This great task allowed students at all levels to be challenged and successful. Some students could apply their knowledge of addition by regrouping; some students multiplied, while others experimented with calculators.

We have also begun to find the main idea in a piece of nonfiction writing. We discussed that when authors write nonfiction, they are writing about a topic and want us to know something important about the topic. This is called the main idea of the text. The author shares details about the topic to capture our interest and help us learn about the topic. Finding the main idea helps us to comprehend the text.

In Science, we continue to use building challenges as an opportunity to apply our knowledge of structural design and materials and to work with and learn from others in the classroom. These learning challenges will continue to be important as we consistently strive to create a cohesive and nurturing classroom community, filled with kind, empathic and engaged students.

Please be reminded that our google classroom is a great resource for finding more information about a lesson we have been following in class and a helpful way to stay connected to our learning if your child is absent for an extended period of time.

This week, please remember that we will be going to the Telus Sparks Science Center on Tuesday, November 22nd, for a full-day field trip.
