Week of Sept 12th

We had a wonderful week in Room 8. In literacy, we have started to discuss how to improve our writing skills to include more detail and how to entertain our audience. To help support this process, we discussed a watermelon versus a seed story or the concept of exploding the moment. We will be working on this skill throughout the year as we improve our writing skills. As an introductory lesson, it was impressive to see the level of writing that already exists.

In math this week, we introduced the concept of finding the area of a 2-D dimensional shape. The grade 3's learned how to use a cm grid and count the number of grids in an area, and the grade 4's applied their knowledge of multiplication by using the formula area= Length x width. Both grades also learned and reviewed their knowledge of measurement. We practiced measuring common classroom items to the nearest centimetre and then introduced measuring in millimetres.

Our class is very excited to begin to apply their knowledge of the area, perimeter, and measurement as well as 2-D and 3-D shapes with the introduction of our culminating project, building a 3-D Tiny house. This project will include many mathematical outcomes and is a wonderful springboard into our Science topics, Building with a Variety of Materials as well as Waste and our World. Students spent some time looking at photographs of tiny homes and different layouts. We also discussed the pros and cons of choosing this type of home and lifestyle. It will be great to see how this project unfolds during the next few weeks.
