Week of April 11th

How lovely to enjoy being outdoors for our field trip to the Calgary Zoo this week! I want to take a moment to thank our parent volunteers who helped make our trip possible. We had a wonderful time applying the learning we have been undertaking in class regarding animal adaptation. While at the zoo, our learning task was as follows:

In class, the students have been busy researching a specific animal's life cycle, its habitat and the adaptations the animal requires to survive. In addition, we have connected this project to include literacy as we have been busy preparing a script and practicing reading it out loud to begin creating a claymation stop motion video.

In Math this week, we have completed our multiplication and division unit. In our division unit, the students learned about division as a method of sharing. We learned how to model two ways of sharing: when the number of sets is known and when the number of items in each set is known. We also learned how to divide by skip counting and how to write an addition sentence for each division sentence. The students discovered the relationship between division and multiplication and understood when to multiply or divide was appropriate. We also solved word problems involving multiplication and division. The students are encouraged to continue practicing their multiplication and division facts up to 9x9 as we will continue to have daily opportunities to practice these facts to improve our recall. To help develop another strategy to learn our 6, 7, 8, and 9 multiplication facts, we discovered another trick using our fingers. I have attached the video below.
