Week of Feb. 27th

This week in literacy, we continued to look closely at the skills required to write a biography. As a class, we all researched and collaborated to write a group biography about David Attenborough and Keith Haring.
Next week the students will choose their individual of interest to research and write a biography. After reading several biographies, we determined what is required in each paragraph and how to link our sentences together so that the information flows nicely with good transition words. We also used this opportunity to discuss how to edit our work and avoid repeating the name of an individual over and over again. We have also been intentionally learning how to decipher and use the synonyms for their, there, and they're, as well as to and two. Below is our student class collaboration.

Writing a Biography

David Attenborough

Paragraph 1

Name/Gender

When they were born

Where they were born/where are they now

Childhood

- siblings

-important events

-hobbies

-what makes them special

David Attenborough was born on May 8th 1926 in England. In his family there were two brothers. He loved nature when he was young and when he grew up he wanted to be environmentalist. He started to collect fossils. But that was not his first job. He was a broadcaster. He loved to travel to different places and learn about all of the cool animals and plants.

Paragraph 2

-How he/she got interested in their topic

-What did they do that is so important and got them famous

-Family?

-Did they have an idol?

-What do they believe in?

-When did they get famous?

-Fun facts?

Mr. Attenborough started to make documentaries because he wanted to tell people about what was out there in the world. David was then able to teach others about living creatures and the environment. He thought that when people learn about something important they are more likely to take care of and support the animals. Sir Attenborough became famous for travelling around the world and learning about animals as well as plants. He became a “Sir” because he was knighted by the Queen. When you do something really important then the Queen will knight by putting a sword on the person’s shoulders.

Paragraph 3

-What legacy (what will they be remembered for)

 did they leave behind?

-Are they still alive or

have they passed away

On May 8th David will celebrate his birthday and he will turn 97. Because of David’s documentaries and his life’s work he will leave a legacy behind that makes people want to help and support animals and keep their species alive. Sir Attenborough would want us to be curious about nature and protect it.
