Welcome back to 2023!

Hello,

It has been such a lovely week seeing everyone back in the classroom! We did not waste much time getting back into the thick of things!

In literacy, we started off the New Year exploring the difference between a biography and an autobiography. The students are now in the midst of creating their own autobiographies using a creative technique called a Life-Map. A life-map is a timeline that includes key moments from the past and helps one consider what future goals and plans they want to explore. We are writing short paragraphs addressing a specific event to accompany our life-maps. While writing these paragraphs, we focus on linking our ideas properly, avoiding run-on sentences. As we complete our life-maps I will be sure to post some for you to see.

In Science this week, we continued to address the topic of Waste and our World. As part of this unit, we have been identifying waste disposal methods currently used within the local community and which products go where. We have also been taking a close look at learning how to identify wastes that may be toxic to people and the environment. Using a scavenger hunt, the students were introduced to hazardous symbols and what each symbol means. This weekend, the students are to explore the hazardous wastes in their homes with an adult. Using a take-home survey, they will identify products that contain the hazardous symbols for poisonous, flammable, explosive and corrosive products. They are also encouraged to ask an adult what the product is used for, how it is stored and how it is disposed of.

When we have completed our survey, we will discuss, look at the City of Calgary disposal site and identify how the types of products should be disposed of. We will then create an infographic to share our knowledge with others.
