Week of October 24th

As part of our Social Studies program, we are learning about Alberta, and it's regions. As a class, we are extending our focus to include significant Indigenous Landmarks in Alberta. The grade 3/4 students are busy learning how to create a google slide show and researching one important Alberta Indigenous Landmark. We will be sharing and teaching each other where the landmarks are located in Alberta, the significance of these landmarks to the Indigenous people, and what you can expect to see when you visit. Our initial research has found many wonderful locations that have been placed on our google classroom, such as; Okotoks Rock, Ancient Buffalo Rock, Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, Mt. Yamnuska. Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, Grassi Lakes, Grotto Canyon.

In Science, we have started our Waste and our World Unit. This week we began to identify wastes produced within our community and the different forms of pollution. We have also begun to explore our human consumption and learn the methods used for disposal. This week we will discuss that some waste materials are biodegradable, some are reusable, and others are toxic.

In literacy, we continue to find creative ways to engage in the writing process. This week's two tasks included writing about What our dream vacation would be and How to survive (anything). The students were very creative and should a fun sense of humour. Our focus is turning towards not only applying our writing skills but learning how to spend an equal amount of time when writing on the editing process. The following have been the editing
steps we have been required to complete so far;
1) All of my sight words are spelled correctly using the word wall.
2) Have I checked to ensure that each syllable in my words has at least one vowel sound?
3) Have I circled any words that are spelled wrong but are good choice words?
4) Have I used upper and lower case letters correctly, including the word "I"?
5) Are all of my sentences complete and make sense?
6) Have I used a variety of sentence starters and juicy words to add detail?

In Math, we have been reviewing how to write numbers correctly from zero to two thousand and applying this knowledge to writing a personal cheque. We have also spent time learning ( gr. 3's) and reviewing (gr. 4's) place value to 9999. We have also learned how to round numbers to the nearest 10's, such as 57 will be round to 60 and 342 will be round to 340. To support our review of adding up to 20 using our knowledge of creating a friendly ten, our grade three's played the game totality. If your child is still requiring support creating a friendly ten when adding and are interested in playing I have included the game in our google classroom and a more detailed explanation of what a "friendly ten" is.

I would like to also let you know that on November 22nd, our class will be going to Telus Sparks for the entire day. If you wish to volunteer we would love to have you join us. Please let me know as soon as you are able. We are also making a class request for the following items, egg cartons and large cereal boxes.
