Week of June 20th

Our whole last week was packed with wonderful learning experiences!

We had beautiful weather on our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Thank you to our volunteers who kindly joined us! We had a great time learning about the specific habitat at the Sanctuary and the incredibly diverse population of birds, mammals and insects found in the grasslands, forest, water and riparian. Time was also spent learning about pollinating insects and their vital role in our ecosystem. One specific pollinating insect that was particularly fascinating was the leaf cutter bee. These amazing bees cut leaves to construct nests in cavities (mostly in rotting wood) and create multiple cells in the nest, each with a single large and pollen for the larva to eat. Leaf cutting bees are important pollinators of wildflowers, fruits, vegetables and other crops. We also learned about many other common insects, their lifecycle and their adaptations.

Our afternoon was spent walking through this wonderful Sanctuary where we saw garter snakes, golden eye, wood ducks, mergansers, deer, bottom-dwelling suckerfish, and so much more. From a historical perspective, we also discovered the origins of the bird sanctuary. We learned that in 1883 Colonel James Walker settled the land that the Sanctuary now occupies, and in 1910 the current brick house- named Inglewood was built.

In science this week, we explored the nature of liquids and their interaction with other materials. We examined droplets by watching liquids trickle down slopes and their flow rates and by observing liquid interactions with various materials. The students already had a very good grasp of these concepts, and we were able to extend our learning to include a conversation and experiment about liquid density and how that affects the liquid's mass.

In math, the grade three class spent time reviewing concepts from the entire year. We also applied our knowledge of fraction and how it relates to cooking. Smoothies were on our menu as we enjoyed and learned about a healthy snack option.

During this last week in math with Ms. Yasin, students had the opportunity to review their number sense learning from the year. Students learned a new medium to do this through Kahoot! This is an online space where you can find quizzes (from all subjects) to play with your peers! Everyone did an amazing job listening to instructions and then navigating the process through their iPads.

Our week ended with a wonderful Cowboy-themed activity day. A big thank you to all of the student staff and parents that made this day a great success!!!!!
