Week of May 9th

In literacy this week we continued to develop our writing skill as it relates to the art of persuasion. To begin with we discussed what it mean to "persuade". To help teach persuasive writing the story " I wanna Iguana" and "I wanna new room" by Karen Kaufman Orloff  was a great place to start. These stories are a series of letters between a mother and father and their son. In his letters the son is trying hard to convince his mom to let him get a pet iguana and his dad to let him have his own room. In the end, both parents have great counter arguments against his reasons but the boy's reasons prevail and a compromise is made.

After reading the stories we talked about the specific techniques that the little boy used to persuade his parents such as humor, appealing to his parents emotions and using logical reasoning. We also talked about what makes a good argument. As a class we then brainstormed some topics that we felt would be important to us to try to persuade someone.

The students did a wonderful job and will be sharing with you their letter this week.

In physical education this week we had a wonderful time using the new nets and trying our hand at volleyball. To add another level of fun, volleyballs were replaced with balloons!

This week in math both  Ms. Yasin and Ms. Harris 's  students learned about Canadian coins. They explored each individual coin, what it looks like, and its value in cents. Students were encouraged to use the correct vocabulary and talk about the coins using their names (nickel, dime, quarter, loonie, toonie). Everyone was excited to use real money to sort and count coins!

The grade 2 class ended off the week with adding different coins together to make a sum less that one dollar. Learning was extended with the opportunity for students to create a sum using any coins they wanted. We came up with multiple ways to make one value!

The grade three's have applied their ability to count using the patterns of 5, 10 and 25. We have learned when adding coins to always start with the largest value and add on. We have also discovered how to combine the value of coins to make adding easier. This week the grade three's we will continue learning about money and how to make change.
