Week of May 2nd

This was a fabulous week for the children to get outside! We started with a wonderful opportunity to learn about orienteering through SOGO. This adventure running program helped our students learn about navigation while developing endurance, agility and speed. The students showed great participation during the two days and worked hard to apply their map reading skills.

Since last week the excitement has been building as we prepared to take our first field trip to the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area. We had a wonderful day exploring the park and extending our knowledge about the importance of Nature's ability to work in harmony and balance. We saw first-hand examples of symbiotic, parasitic and predator-prey relationships. Through bio-facts, our facilitators also shared many other aspects about the plants and animals that call this 4800 acres home.

No field trip can be complete without lots of outdoor games, especially Camouflage. Now that we have returned many of the topics we were introduced to will continue to be explored further in the classroom. Can you see our little hidden animals?

To help capture some of our learning, the students completed a journal entry to record a few ideas of things that stood out for them from our trip.

"I really loved how gorgeous the landscape was. I did not realize it was possible to see the mountains and the city at the same time" Milla

Ms. Yasin's math group has had a busy few weeks of learning! Students finished reviewing fact families and strategies used to create a fact family. Students added their very own "fact family flowers" to their math door! Then students spent some time working with addition and subtraction word problems. Subtraction word problems can catch us off guard sometimes, so the math group had a chance to decompose subtraction word problems in order to identify what makes it a subtraction problem! Students reviewed key subtraction words and looked for them in their questions.

Grade three's have been applying their knowledge of measurement and perimeter. They have been learning how to convert centimetres into meters and used this skill when given the challenge of predicting and then measuring the perimeter of our soccer field. They have also been applying their knowledge of fact families and how this concept relates to multiplication and division ( i.e. 2x4=8, 4x2=8, 8 divided by 2=4 and 8 divided by 4= 2)
