Week of Feb. 14th

 Week of Feb. 14th

Despite our week only being three days, we had many wonderful activities. On Monday, we celebrated Valentine’s Day by discovering the history behind this holiday and how writing Valentine’s cards came to be. The students also extended their exploration of Kandinsky and found Squares with Concentric Circles. This work inspired our Valentine art project while applying our knowledge of complimentary and warm, and cool colours.

Our class exploration of Black Historical figures continued this week as we learned about Rosa Parks and her courageous act of standing up against segregation, the inspiring sound of Ella Fitzgerald, “The queen of Jazz,” and her unique scat singing style. After opportunities to practice summarizing the information we have learned about several biographies, the students will be researching their historical figures and independently writing a summary about them.

Michael, the Magician, joined us for a virtual presentation called the Anti-Bully Magic show. He blended magic and a vital message discussing bullying and its impact on kids and how to combat bullying together.

In Math, the Grade three’s continued to develop mental math strategies such as identifying and describing various patterns in an addition chart. We also reviewed making a friendly ten by decomposing addends to make pairs that add to 10 or the nearest ten.

9+6=9+1+5 (9+1 makes 10 +5 more) and 86+5= 86+4+1 (86+4 makes 90 +1 more)

We also reviewed the terms addend, sum and commutative property of addition; 20+30=50 30+20=50

This week in math with Ms. Yasin, students practiced regrouping with addition! They practiced regrouping visually with base 10 blocks and regrouping using place value. Students worked hard solving word problems and showing their thinking! Students were able to bring the "snow" into math class by practicing their ordinals and days of the week with a paper snowball challenge, where each "snowball" had a day of the week on it and students had to write the next day of the week! It was a super fun math warm up for the week!
