Week of September 19th

 Hello Everyone,

I want to begin by thanking all of the families who were able to join us for our open house on Friday afternoon. It was lovely to see some parents I have not yet met in person and to showcase all of the great work that has been unfolding in room 8 since the beginning of September. If you did not get a chance to connect and would like to, please drop me an email, and we can arrange a time to chat.

This week we had our soccer residency; this was an excellent time for our students to develop their soccer skills further and learn many aspects of the game. This opportunity also proved to be a great chance for us to continue to develop our skills as a class to focus on the importance of teamwork and communication. In addition, we learned the value of playing a game to have fun without emphasizing the winner.

In literacy, we created a poem showcasing "me". We reviewed the importance of adding adjectives to describe nouns and using words to express personal characteristics. We also learned when making a list, commas are the most common way to separate one list item from the other, with the final two items in the list being separated by "and" or "or." Our poem was also created to accompany our whimsical pastel drawings. Pastels are widely loved because of their intense pigmentation, and thus, their ability to be the only medium needed to create a bright and vibrant picture.

Our tiny houses are underway. We have been applying our ability to use perimeter, area, measurement and knowledge of 2-D shapes to create our design on 1 cm grid paper. Some are now ready to transfer their drawings onto cardboard which we are discovering is not as easy as it looks. Learning to use and read a ruler takes practice, and this project proves to be a great task to develop these skills. In addition, some students are extending their architectural talents to include windows, lofts, chimneys, stairs and skylights in their plans! As each step progresses, the enthusiasm continues to build.

In social studies, we have started our unit on Alberta regions. To start this topic, we have learned how to log into our google classroom. Here, I have placed many resources for the students to access for their research. This has also been a great time to review the importance of using technology appropriately. Please have your child log in and show you our google classroom as they will be using it a lot this year, as well as access it if they are absent.

In preparation for our Terry Fox run on Monday, time was spent discussing the incredible contribution that Terry has made. We discussed the qualities that make a "hero" and how the experiences of others inspire us. Please support your child in bringing a loonie or toonie for Terry and dress appropriately for the weather and running. Proper running shoes and a water bottle are vital to enjoying this important activity.

Mark your calendar- On October 18th, we will be going to Fort Calgary. This will be a full-day outing with more information to follow. If you would like to volunteer, please drop me an email. I will be accepting parent volunteers on first-come, first-serve bases.
